People of the College

I went to CCP for a while, then I stopped. I was laid off from my job last September. One of my goals was to just focus on school. So when I was laid off, I took the opportunity to come back. Because of CCP’s policies, a lot of my classes transferred and I was able to come back and only take about three to four classes.

My counselor at my high school helped me register for Community College because I do not get much support from my parents. I was looking for help getting to and from campus, so I found out about the KEYS [Keystone Education Yields Success] program at CCP. They have helped me a lot—increased my motivation.
Kavon
I’m currently at Temple University studying Theater and Business Administration. In my high school, I was encouraged to think outside of the box and think about time management. My counselor from my high school recommended we go to CCP first because the College adds a lot of value and character for students. I ended up enrolling in CCP with a full ride!
Paluma
I come from Puerto Rico, so the easiest way to transfer my credits and not have a big student loan was to come here to CCP. I was looking around at other colleges and CCP seemed like a really good fit for what I was looking for—and I heard good things. I’m glad I did.
Latasha
I’m not the traditional-aged college student. It was not until I realized I needed a new approach if I wanted to accomplish the goals I had, so I took the placement test here at the College, and I now take classes!
Symeon
I had always tried to figure out which college to go to. Originally, I was going to go straight to Temple or Drexel, but then I started to hear about community colleges and I realized it was probably a better plan than going directly to a 4-year university.
My major here at the College is Business Administration. All of the ‘fun’ activities I thought were just for ‘fun’ as a kid were actually business-related so I decided that would be the best career to get into.
Andreas
I came to Philadelphia in 2017 because my husband is from Philadelphia. I started going back to university in Germany, but then I met him so I moved to Philly and started going to college here and I really enjoy it!
Lesley
I came to the College because of the ESL program and the Criminal Justice classes. I’m in the ESL classes right now and taking my English and Math classes—it’s pretty cool. I really like criminology and in general, I like to help people. I want to help people stay out of trouble and off the streets.
Nilufer
I came to CCP [Community College of Philadelphia] in the spring of 2014 after I received my GED. I am an immigrant student so I was very happy to find CCP. I am originally from Bangladesh. When I enrolled in CCP, I tried to find a tutor and go to the Learning Labs to help with my assignments especially since I am an ESL student.
George
After high school, I neglected the fact that ‘college is to further your education’. I just started working, but after a while you notice you’re living check to check, and having a career is a different thing. So, I ended up here at Community College. I’m 26 years old, and I’m happy to be here right now. My major is Engineering. After I get my associate degree here at Community College, I can transfer to Drexel and continue my education there.
Nasir
At first I took classes at Shippensburg, but the school wasn’t right for me so I came back to Philly because I had already went to the school [Community College of Philadelphia] before. When I was in 11th grade, I took CCP’s dual enrollment program. My major here is Business—it was Psychology, but my high school counselor said I have to do something I’m passionate about. I’m passionate about sports, and I want to be a sports agent one day.
Javon
After high school—I failed out of college, so I went into the Marine Corps. I did that for nine years, then got out and worked for the government as a Federal Law Enforcement Officer with the Department of Justice. From there I worked oversees working on various assignments as a contractor with the State Department and private entities. I eventually decided to pursue my dreams goals: going back to college.
Paulina
I came here [Philadelphia] about five years ago through the Cultural Exchange Program. I’m originally from Poland. I just felt like something was missing in my life. I’m a very ambitious person, so I decided to sign up for college at CCP. I do have a big interest in numbers so I decided to major in Business.
Joseph
I looked at community college to get my bearings—try to get back to college life in the US. My options were CCP or DELCO, but I didn’t have a car and I knew I wanted to go to school in the city and eventually go to Temple. The College has definitely helped me decide what I want to do and focus on. CCP has allowed me to catch up to my friends who are ahead of me.
Sherry
I came to CCP this year for my first semester—this is my first time in college! I came here because my support told me to go to school. I really love nursing and taking care of people so I’m pursuing home care. My pastor at church encouraged me to go to college. My mother who had two strokes has also encouraged me because I’m her aide. Attending CCP is a great environment for everyone—especially because of the cost.
Yaya
My major here at the College is Medical Laboratory Technology and Biology. In the beginning, I didn’t know what I wanted to major in so I took a biology course and that helped me realize I wanted to study medicine.
Russell
I heard about this program called CME (Center for Male Engagement) when I was in high school and it attracted me to CCP. When I leave CCP my goal is to be a best performing actor. I’ve always dreamed of that! I also want to help out my community—where people can be mentored and never feel like they’re alone or struggling.
Anthony
I’m originally from the country of Nigeria. I didn’t have it in mind to come to CCP at first. My brother in law said I should come here. I have a degree in Biochemistry from the University of Nigeria-Soka, but I got it more than 10 years ago. Out of curiosity, I took the placement test and found myself here.
Henry
I was originally at Penn State. I went to school here in Philly my whole life, so I decided to go to there. I was there for a year, but it ended up being pretty expensive. So I came back to Philly, and just worked jobs trying to make ends meet. I decided to come back to college and come here to Community College of Philadelphia to study Engineering. I then plan to attend Temple University. Right now I’m working in the Single Stop office and they offer a lot of help to students.
Sajeda
I’m originally from Vancouver, BC—Canada. I moved to Philadelphia two years ago to be with my husband because he’s from PA. I used to work in higher ed before I moved here and even though I wanted to be a teacher way back in the day, I ended up in marketing. As soon as I interviewed here, I fell in love with the people. At the College, it feels like everyone is about the people....
Morgan
I was looking for a way to get college done with as few loans as humanly possible. I graduated from the Science Leadership Academy and a lot of our students went to really big four-year schools—MIT, Boston University, who have since left to come here to take less expensive credits—and who all laughed at me.
Vincent
I was keeping my eyes open for LGBTQ-related positions, but I wasn’t actively looking. Then I saw a job posting for the LGBTQ Center at the College and applied right away! The next day I got a phone call for an interview. By the following week, I was officially hired.
Zoey
I’ve been going to CCP since the fall of 2016. Philadelphia has become my home and through that, the College has become a second home. This was a good stepping-stone for me to figure out what I really want to do. I picked CCP because of its sense of diversity and I felt comfortable here—especially coming into a big city. It’s also not as expensive as a four-year institute, so the price plays a really good role in it too. I’m a Theater student, but I’m also really involved.
Oak
I’ve lived in Philadelphia the past three and a half years—originally from South Jersey. I initially applied to Temple and they denied me and suggested I try Community College of Philadelphia. I am glad that they did! I’ve saved a bunch of money and have been given tremendous opportunities. For instance, I was part of the Bucknell [Scholars] Program this past summer. I never thought I could accomplish something like that.
Shanice
I came here in 2013, and I was pursuing piano performance. I then discovered CCP had a Sound Recording Technology program so I took that as a second major. I was enjoying all of that! I went to Liberty University first, but found out that it wasn’t accredited. I have one more year and then I plan to attend Temple University where I plan to study Piano Performance or Vocal Performance. I’m trying to do both though!
Wanda
I decided to come here [Community College of Philadelphia] after I got rejected from the Art Institute. They recommended I start very small. I met with Simone Zelitch here and she encouraged me to get into the English program, so I studied English. I like books and I like history. I really wasn’t introduced to Journalism or PR, so the focus was just English and seeing what I could do with that.
Antonio
I ended up here at CCP [Community College of Philadelphia] because I didn’t have a smooth transition into Temple—that’s where I wanted to go. I wasn’t given a straight-forward decline or acceptance into Temple, and at that time I was in a program that didn’t allow me to wait that long to hear a final decision. My program presented CCP—it was a quick way to get me started with building my credits.
Daniel
My brother, Kevin, was a graduate here [Community College of Philadelphia]. He brought me into the CME [Center for Male Engagement] when I was still in high school and had me meet boss man [Director Derrick Perkins]. I was super, super nervous. A year later, I came into CCP through the summer program. I went through the program and met some friends who are still here with me. I like it so much, I’ve helped with the other programs.
Brandon
I’ve known the director of the CME [Center for Male Engagement], Mr. Derrick Perkins, for a very long time. When I was getting out of high school in 2013, I didn’t know where I wanted to go with things. He’s always been a mentor to me, and he encouraged me to come to the College and told me CME would help me get started.
Marissa
“CCP [Community College of Philadelphia] came to my high school. I graduated from Agora Cyber Charter School. I was out of school for a year, and then I came to CCP because it was cheaper and a fast way to get acclimated to the college life. I took two English classes here and then was nominated to go to the honor society here—that’s why I’m in the Liberal Arts - Honors program. I’ll be graduating with honors and I’m part of Phi Theta Kappa [Honor Society].
Shalee
I first came to CCP [Community College of Philadelphia] looking to enhance my financial situation. I have a B.S. degree in Biology and a minor in Chemistry. I found it difficult to re-enter that industry so I came back, and just started a new career. I wanted to go into Mortuary Science. I had to take all of the business courses I needed. I was not able to transfer to Northampton Community College which is where they have that program.
Jennifer
My journey started here [Community College of Philadelphia] after the conclusion of a tumultuous time in my life. I’m a spiritual person. I said a prayer—I had an epiphany. I remember writing a business plan for a nonprofit for resource assistance and information about nutrition. This opened my eyes to the food plight in the city. There are people in the city that don’t have access to decent food. And I remember thinking, ‘If I’m going to do this, I need to get an education.’
Breyaun
Out of high school I went to Bloomsburg. I wound up dropping a class, and I lost my financial aid. So I had to move back home because I couldn’t stay there without the aid. I said, ‘I’m going to keep going to school because I don’t want to stop.’ I wound up at CCP [Community College of Philadelphia]. I’m graduating this May!
Adrienne
I said, "I’m going to go back to college and get my life back." I enjoyed cooking, and the commercials kept coming on television to go back to school, so that’s what I did. People in my family said, ‘you really can cook, this is really good!’ I like making people happy when I cook—that’s what sparked my interest.
Mark
I actually graduated from CCP [Community College of Philadelphia] in 2011, so I have one degree in Computer Information Systems. I never did anything with it. I actually landed a job at Temple University Hospital. I worked there for three years before I decided I wanted to go back to school for Nursing. I applied to the program and surprisingly got right in. I took Nursing 101, but did not pass the first time.
Katherine
It was actually ten years in between me [thinking of and] actually attending Community College of Philadelphia. I always knew I wanted to go into English, but life has a way of getting to you. I had a daughter—she’s three years old now.
Carol
I went to the College here a long time ago—way back when the Community College was in the Snellenburg...
Anyssa
I came to the College [Community College of Philadelphia] after I completed homeschooling. Financially it was a good start for me, it was feasible for me and I needed the resources for something that was going to help get me into a really good college eventually. I saw this as a boosting pad for me.
Robert
Initially my job was going to pay for me to go to back to school, but I left that job, and now I’m here on my own initiative to sharpen up—get better organizational skills. I feel like school is just like a book club.
Timothy
I imagined it growing up…every time you hear about college, you hear about crazy parties and you see people just hanging off of rafters. And I didn’t want that. I’m more focused on the actual sit down and study time. I know that sounds boring, but I figured I’m here I might as well make the most of it. I got here, and I saw there are a couple of people that are here to just party and everything but usually they filter out after the third week—for better or for worse.
Fendy
I came here straight from high school. I’ve never stopped going since 2012—so it’s been a long journey! I decided I wanted to do nursing since 2014. I’ve been working in the health care system since I was 16 years old.
Dasiah
The first two semesters here [Community College of Philadelphia], I took it really slow, which was nice. I took two classes, and then three classes, because I thought if I did not do well in high school, I may not do well in college. I was just making sure I could do this. It’s been really nice though. All of the professors are really concerned about you transferring. That’s their primary concern. They want to make sure you’re getting into the school you need.
Malik
I got into photography last summer. I started taking pictures while we were at Kutztown University with the new students coming into the Center for Male Engagement (CME). It was just something I did for fun at first, and then it ended up turning into something I actually liked doing. Last semester I took Photography 101 and I did pretty well! I sold some of my pictures here [at the College] for the photo sale.
Jared
In 2016, I moved up here [Philadelphia] and enrolled in CCP [Community College of Philadelphia] to get started. For me, the College has been beneficial in a way of just networking and getting concrete career goals. As far as the affiliation with professors here, I think of the Art Department in particular because I am an Art and Design major.
Julio
So I decided to come three years ago. I worked really, really hard because my English was really bad and also because I didn’t know anyone here. I didn’t know anything about community college. I didn’t know we have the opportunity to get free education or finish late. Pretty much I thought my destiny was just work, but then I started to figure out information about it. I decided to apply to Community College of Philadelphia.
Keisha
Me and my two sons, we moved up here. I did a little bit of research online and I found the Community College of Philadelphia. I went with the first thing I saw—I kind of lucked up so to speak. I knew I wanted to do nursing so I did a little bit of research and saw what I needed to do to get into the program. I took a full load of classes the first year. I applied, I got in and I’ll be graduating in four or five weeks with an associate’s degree in Nursing.
Jessica
I applied to Community College of Philadelphia and I started working towards getting all of the requirements for the Nursing program. A couple of mishaps, but I’m here. I got in and I graduate at the end of May. I always had an inkling that I wanted to help people. I was always the friend that had everything in her bag—toothpicks, ibprofen or something. I just loved helping people. But I wasn’t quite sure what I wanted to do.

I'm from Cambodia. I was born in a refugee camp in Thailand. My mom and dad and my five siblings, we came here to America sponsored by a church. We ended up going to a Christian school and building our life in America in Philadelphia. I was actually raised in West Philadelphia. I grew up in a multi-cultural neighborhood so I'm a very diverse-minded kind of person now—it made me who I am. The reason why I'm here at the College is because I'm 33.
Maxim
I’m going to graduate next semester in May. I’ve already signed up for the Dual Admissions program for Temple University. I’ll major in African Studies. To be honest with you, the study abroad trip at the College [to Tanzania] geared me towards that. I have a love of various different things, but I was more focused on African-American studies because that’s what I know.
Chet
I signed up in September of 1974. I figured I’d just load up and see what I can do, and so I just went through school consistently. When I say “consistently,” through the summer, etc., was able to graduate with a Computer Science degree. While going to school I was able to acquire a part-time job with a company at that time was called, Unicoil that used to service the College in terms of jocking in the paper when it used to come out of the print machine.
