Chet
I signed up in September of 1974. I figured I’d just load up and see what I can do, and so I just went through school consistently. When I say “consistently,” through the summer, etc., was able to graduate with a Computer Science degree. While going to school I was able to acquire a part-time job with a company at that time was called, Unicoil that used to service the College in terms of jocking in the paper when it used to come out of the print machine. And then I graduated from the College. My next step is, I need to get a job. So I put on my suit. I had my [Community College of Philadelphia] diploma. I went to a company out in Landsdale called American Olean Tile. They hired me as a computer operator and I started to learn more and more about my field.
By 1980, there was an instructor at [Community College of Philadelphia] that I was under. His name was James Sombolla—he ran the Business Department and he asked me to come back and teach at the school. So that’s my second hit with Community College [of Philadelphia]. In 1980, I worked as an Adjunct Professor in the Computer Science Department—writing courses, doing various different things of that particular area…and I did that from 1980 to 1985. In 1985, because I was really sought out in the industry, I couldn’t continue to do [teach] anymore.
My third hit came in 2010—I acquired into Alpha [Alpha Enterprise Group]. When I acquired into 2010, we won the contract and had already had a contract with the College for many, many years. And so now I’m connected with the College from the sense that now I am the vendor that services all of the office supplies for the College.
A as things would happen, Darryl Irizarry, head of the College’s Alumni Association, asked me be a board member in the Alumni Association. So that’s my fourth hit with the College. My life structure has been circled around interfacing with [Community College of Philadelphia] and giving back!
Editor’s Note: Alpha Enterprise Group gives scholarships every year to students of the College. Each year, there’s about seven students that receive scholarships from Alpha Enterprise Group to further their education.
