The College supported World Food Day on Oct. 24 and its mission of #ZEROHUNGER. To start the day, the College cut the ribbon on its new community garden, named Grady's Garden. The Food Day Expo featured healthy snack samples, guidance on how to eat a full meal on a budget, as well as a raffle prize and giveaways. Students led the Harvest Day Festival, sharing their take on autumn’s best-baked goods and crafts. The Culinary Arts program demonstrated how to cook up creative meals from budget-friendly ingredients.
The College's MarcDavid LGBTQ Center celebrated its official opening on Friday, Oct. 5, followed by a festive recognition of National Coming Out Day with an interactive drag show on Thursday, Oct. 11, featuring performances by local drag queens. The Center provides support and resources to LGBTQ students, and offers events and educational opportunities that will benefit all members of the College community.
The College marked its third annual Human Trafficking Awareness Day with a series of events on Thursday, Oct. 11. The day began with stories from a trafficking survivor. Other sessions included fair trade and its impact on human trafficking, how law enforcement and the courts are working together to combat human trafficking, and screenings of the documentary, "Not My Life," a film that depicts the cruel and dehumanizing practices of human trafficking and modern slavery on a global scale. Faculty, staff and students gathered outside the Bonnell Building at 11:30 a.m.
September 25 may have brought rain, but that didn't dampen anyone's spirits at the Black and Gold Bash. Students took a break between classes to have a bite to eat, have a little fun and learn more about student clubs and organizations, and support services at the College.
The first Fireside Chat of the 2018-2019 academic year was just one of many events taking place at the College in recognition of Latinx Heritage Month. Staff, faculty and students gathered to reflect on Latinx culture and enjoy s'mores and cider by the fireside.
Constitution Day commemorates the formation and signing of the U.S. Constitution on September 17, 1787, recognizing all who are born in the U.S., or by naturalization, have become citizens. The College recognized National Constitution Day on Sept. 17, where students were invited to learn more about the Constitution, register to vote, learn how to vote on a real voting machine from the City Commissioner's Office and complete a "Why I Vote" card to hang on our pledge wall. #CCPVotes
The College community came together on the morning of Sept. 11 to pay tribute to the memory of those who lost their lives on 9/11, including members of the Philadelphia community. As their names were read aloud, thirty flags were raised throughout the crowd to acknowledge the 30 Pennsylvanians who tragically lost their lives that day.
Student, faculty and staff volunteers welcomed new students and welcomed back returning students during Welcome Week. Students were greeted with cookies and coffee in the morning. In the afternoons, students on Main Campus were invited to chill out with ice cream, water ice and popcorn. Students with evening classes at all locations were invited to indulge in delicious college staples like pizza, pretzels and donuts. Welcome back, students!
