Dr. Generals kicked off the first Fireside Chat of the year in recognition of African American History Month. He read excerpts from The Cross of Redemption, by James Baldwin, and Between the World and Me, by Ta-Nehisi Coates. Students and staff followed with a conversation about current challenges and solutions.
Spring 2019 Professional Development Week was held Jan. 7-11. A major focus of the week was poverty in Philadelphia, its impact on the city and College, and ideas for dealing with this important issue. Other activities included a luncheon with entertainment by artists from our new record label, Spring Garden Records; four designated Diversity Certificate sessions, Assessment Tuesday, and Recognizing and Reporting Child Abuse: Mandated and Permissive Reporting in Pennsylvania training offered on Wednesday and Thursday.
Laughter and enjoyment filled the air at the annual holiday brunch on December 11 in the Great Hall. Faculty and staff enjoyed brunch, dancing to the tunes of DJ Ricochet, games and prizes. The Collge's 20-, 30-, 40- and 50-year employees were also recognized at the event.
The College launched the Fall 2018 issue of Pathways Magazine on December 3 at the Pathways Magazine Breakfast and panel discussion in the Klein Cube. This issue focuses on our health care graduates and the role they fill in taking care of residents, and how our relationships with alumni, employers and health care facilities strengthen educational endeavors and serve residents in need. Dr. Mary Anne Celenza, dean of the Division of Math, Science and Health careers, served as the moderator.
On Nov. 15, Dr. Generals and members of the Marketing and Creative Services team visited the local K-8 and adoptee Spring Garden School to share "Oh Dear, What's a Career?," a children's book written and designed by staff on the Marketing and Creative Services team. Collectively, they read the book aloud to two Spring Garden School classrooms, and discussed limitless possibilities of the students' future as they colored samples of the original design.
The College officially launched Spring Garden Records on November 8, the College's first music record label. The event included live performances by label artists, including some of our star students. Quincy Harris, aka Q-Deezy, host of The Q on Fox 29 was the master of ceremony, and a free digital download of the label’s first artist release was given to each guest.
The College observed Veterans Day on Friday, Nov. 9. Congressman Dwight Evans was the honorary speaker, joining us to salute the College's and nation's veterans. Veterans' remarks were given by Jason DiPietro, a student veteran at the College and Cnd CEO, MotrPool, an app he developed for veterans, along with Kenneth Blume, an alumnus who gradauated in 2018.
