Adjunct Recognition
Adjuncts are vital to student success at CCP
Adjunct faculty members bring expertise from teaching at many area colleges and universities as well as expertise directly from the professional fields in which they teach. Adjuncts are not only instructors, but provide leadership at CCP as event planners, conference leaders, student group advisors and so much more. We add irreplaceable value and work tirelessly for our students. Here are snapshots of just a few of our amazing adjunct faculty.
We hope you will join us for the annual Adjunct Appreciation Events to be recognized for your work and recognize the amazing work of your colleagues. Check out photos from our most recent Adjunct Appreciation party at the FCTL.

What do you love about teaching at CCP?
My major joy in teaching people anything is to experience their growth, development, and empowerment both in the “subject” and as people, whether the subject is forming an essay, wrestling with subject-verb agreement, or juggling three objects!
What special value do you bring to the College?
I bring to the College my sense of humor, my joy in learning (and teaching), and my patience and persistence in helping others. I also bring my commitment (and the singing of workers’ songs) to the union and to the improvement of working conditions for CCP employees.
Akiko Mori, World Languages
At CCP since 2008
What do you love about teaching at CCP?
I love meeting with new students every semester, interacting with students, creating events/performances for a variety of College events and participating in them with the students; and being in the intellectually stimulating environment.
What special value do you bring to the College?
I have been creating events for the Annual International Festival since 2011, plus the World Cultures and Languages and my students and myself have been performing a Japanese dance for these events. I just received a Festival Award last week on the first day of the International Festival, "in recognition of my outstanding commitment to the ideals of the Festival, to actively work toward presenting programs...." In short, I will do anything if my students and I can bring some interesting performance/work to the College. It's my volunteer work and pleasure. Additionally, I am proud that Japanese enrollment has steadily gone up since I started doing cultural events.
Nwenna Kai Gates, English
At CCP since 2014
What do you love about teaching at CCP?
What I love about teaching at CCP is knowing that I am making a difference in the lives of students locally who will go on to make a difference in the city of Philadelphia.
What special value do you bring to the College?
I bring this diversity of teaching both traditional and non-traditional students from various ethnic, religious, linguistic, racial, and socioeconomic backgrounds.
Donald J. Haldeman, Justice
At CCP since 2016
What do you love about teaching at CCP?
I love the diversity at CCP, the fact that most of my students hold jobs, and there is much less of a sense of entitlement in CCP students.
What special value do you bring to the College?
My value is that I facilitate all my classes in peacemaking circle, which translates into deep dialogue, and my students forging friendships with one another. We utilize the resources they walk through the door with, and it provides them with a unique academic experience.

What do you love about teaching at CCP?
Sharing knowledge because it is empowering.
What special value do you bring to the College?
My own experience of the positive impact that an education can have on you when life-changing events occur - "Education is the one thing you can call your own and no one can ever take it away from you."
Kathy Shaginaw, Chemistry
At CCP off and on (mostly on) since 2001
What do you love about teaching at CCP?
I love the diversity of the students. Having so many non-traditional students is a blessing and a challenge. I love the questions that they bring to the classroom.
What special value do you bring to the College?
I bring my passion for education, over 16 years of experience as an industrial chemist, and resources from my work with publishers and my service to the American Chemical Society. I believe in providing students with lots of resources and giving them every chance to succeed.
