Adopt-A-School Program

Through the Institute for Community Engagement and Civic Leadership (the Institute), Community College of Philadelphia partners with schools in the School District of Philadephia to place college students in high-impact support roles as tutors and classroom assistants. Adopt-A-School tutors provide essential support in English, math, and science to help K-12 grade students achieve success at their grade level and by expanding needed support in the classroom. Through Adopt-A-School, the College also supports partner schools through donation drives, early college exposure events, and parent engagement activities.

Program Goals

Since 2019, the Adopt-A-School Program has had three primary goals:

  • Improve literacy skills
  • Provide early college exposure
  • Support parent engagement

Get Involved - College Faculty and Staff

We are always interested in connecting with faculty and staff at the College who would like to get involved with the Adopt-A-School Program through the Institute for Community Engagement and Civic Leadership. There are several ways you can get involved:

Service Learning

Do you teach a course that could benefit from a hands-on learning experience outside the classroom? Service learning is a highly effective tool and proven teaching method for improving student learning outcomes by applying concepts taught in the classrom to real world situations. Whether you teach English, math, social science, early childhood education, behavioral health/human services, or another discipline, the Adopt-A-School program and our partner schools are great places to implement a one-time, semester-long, or ongoing service learning project.

Donation Drives

Each year, we hold donation drives in support of our partner schools to supply high-need items for their students and families. In the fall, we hold our annual Adopt-A-Family Holiday Drive where we fulfill holiday wish lists for children and collect non-perishable food items; in the spring, we collect personal hygiene items. We welcome you to participate by donating items to these drives and getting your classrooms involved.

Promoting to Students

We want to make the Adopt-A-School Program accessible and available to as many students at the College as possible, but we need your help to spread the word! You can help us by sharing information with your students on Canvas, inviting an Institute staff member to present in a class, or connecting students directly with the Institute to learn more.

If you have ideas for other ways you would like to work with us, please reach out to the Institute team at . We look forward to connecting with you!

Our School Partners

It has been a complete pleasure to partner with the adopt-a-school program. This partnership allows us to have a critical extension of the teacher within the classroom. The tutors we have had this year have gone above and beyond their roles as tutors, they have become part of the spring garden family.

Adopt A Schools has been an amazing program for our students to get tutors and help. They even were able to get mentorship through the program.

I can say with surety that the tutors we have received this year (and in the past) have aided our students in their academic and behavioral growth. We have seen a growth in district testing and have seen a decline in behavioral issues within the classroom.
