Learn about Akoma Day. The Akoma means “heart,” and it is a symbol of love, goodwill, patience, faithfulness, fondness, endurance, and consistency. The Akoma is one of many West African Adinkra symbols.
Nya Akoma (pronounced N yah Ah coma) is the greeting for Akoma Day, also known as Black Love Day, which means get a heart, be patient, return to love. Black Love Day was founded by Ms. Ayo Handy-Kendy, affectionately known as Mama Ayo, in 1993. In 2001, Montsho and Nwasha Edu expanded on the original tenets and purpose to become an international cultural holiday rooted in African spirituality. Akoma Day is a cultural and spiritual alternative to Valentine's Day. The focus of Akoma Day is the intimate relationship and how that relationship creates family, neighborhood, community and nationhoods. Stop by for a good time! Enjoy the music, a dance contest, photo booth, games, a dessert bar, and simply celebrate the day with lots of sweetness! Brought to you by the Lions in Motion Spring Fling Planning Dance Team and the All-Black Student Alliance. All students welcome!

Martial Arts: Grounding Exercise
Wednesday, February 19, 2025 - 12:00pm to 1:00pm
Today we are living our lives with non-stop incoming information to feed our brain. The cell phone/computer has become the most persuasive resources to make decisions to change a course of action or simply being entertained by "watching" what others do... We no longer preserve a time to reconnect with our own inner resource, our intention, the "will" and the disciplined mind to carry it through. This workshop will activate and reconnect with your "inner self" while moving and synchronizing our body and breathing to access our inner self.
