Class Formats
Understanding the Different Class Formats
When registering for classes and checking your schedule, you may see multiple course formats. What do they mean, and how do you tell them apart? Following is a quick guide to the different class formats.
Synchronous Online
- A synchronous class requires you to be online (Zoom) with your professor and classmates on the days and times listed for the class on the registration system.
Asynchronous Online
- An asynchronous class will not have set days and times during which you must be online with your professor and classmates. Your professor will provide course content for you to review when it works for you, though you will still have weekly assignment deadlines to meet—so you will need to make sure you schedule time each week to review course content and complete your assignment.
Hybrid
- A hybrid class combines both in-person and asynchronous online teaching. These classes meet in the classroom weekly and are supplemented with asynchronous online lessons throughout the week. Classroom attendance is mandatory for all hybrid courses.
In-person
- An in-person class meets on campus on regularly scheduled days and times.
Hyflex
- In a Hyflex class, you can choose to attend in person, synchronously online via Zoom or asynchronously online. You have the flexibility to change your choice of format for each class session.
If you don't know which class format is right for you, take the College's class format self-assessment.
