Summer is right around the corner. What are your plans? Now is the time to do some research and plan your summer months. The summer is a good time to get career experience through jobs, internships, and/or volunteering opportunities. Below are some tips to assist you with searching, preparing, and securing an opportunity this summer.
- Spend some time searching for open positions that align with your interests & passions. This way, you’re more likely to end up with a summer job you enjoy. You can use CCP resources such as Pathful Explore to explore jobs and careers and Handshake to search for current job/ internship openings. These resources can be found in your MyCCP Portal > Student Services > Career Connections > Pathful Explore or Handshake.
- Although not every summer job will require a cover letter or resume, all college students should establish a basic resume and cover letter so you’ll be ready when opportunities arise. Creating a resume and cover letter can help potential employers to understand your skill set and highlight what strengths you can bring to that position. Make time to speak with a Career Counselor in the Career Connections Office about perfecting your resume and cover letter today!
- Many PA counties offer summer youth employment programs. These programs offer work experience, teach valuable employment skills, and provide you with a summer income. These opportunities allow you to develop career awareness and work-related social skills. It’s a great way to not only gain experience but also build relationships and network with professionals in your area. Check with your local municipality to see what may be offered to you!
- One way to secure a summer job is to apply in person. Spend a day visiting potential job sites and filling out the job application while you’re there. Remember to dress appropriately, and be ready to answer any preliminary questions on the spot. Having a great 30-second elevator pitch also helps to make a good first impression.
- Sometimes it’s all about WHO YOU KNOW! Networking is one of the best ways to find a summer job. Spend time talking about your work interests with your parents, professors, and friends, and let them know you are looking for summer opportunities. Always take advantage of any opportunity you have to gain access to their professional & social circles. These conversations can provide you with new opportunities and leads on jobs.
Fall Registration
Registration for the fall semester is quickly approaching! Please review the academic calendar to identify the day registration begins for you based on your number of credits. If you are not sure what courses to take for the upcoming semester, schedule an appointment with your Academic Advisor for recommendations. Keep in mind that the sooner you register, the better chance you have of getting the schedule you want!
- Monday, April 3rd – Career Fair Bootcamp: Create a Standout Resume
- Wednesday, April 5th – Career Fair Bootcamp: Maximize Your Success at a Career Fair
- Monday, April 10th – Last Day to withdraw from 15-week courses
- Wednesday, April 12th – Allied Health Transfer Fair
- Thursday, April 13th – Last Day to withdraw from 7B- week courses
- Monday, April 17th – Last Day to withdraw from 10- week courses
- Monday, April 17th – April 23rd – Fall Registration Open (see schedule for your registration date)
Service Spotlight: Career Connections
Individual appointments can be scheduled for:
- Résumé and cover letter writing and reviewing, in person or online
- Mock interview practice and critique
- Job/internship search assistance
- Review of the department's online career tools
- Guidance when making a career change or seeking new employment
