Learning Goals

Participants will:

  • Learn how to use a table that I created to help my students understand the course textbook and promote their critical thinking skills.
  • Learn to use the table to help their students understand plot development as well as cause and effect relationships in the text.
  • Learn how to use the table for their students in teacher-led class discussions, group discussions and homework assignments.

Seminar Description

I will introduce a table that I have used successfully to help improve my English 083-093 intermediate-level ESL students’ understanding of our course textbook “The Little Prince” and improve their critical thinking skills. This very interesting book is an allegory that has a unique plot, themes, symbols and advanced vocabulary. I created a six-question table that helped students understand the plot and the cause-effect relationships in the story. The table consists of six basic questions which students completed orally and in writing. Four of the questions were used to understand the plot by asking Who? What? When? and Where? The questions Why? and How? were used to understand cause and effect relations in the book, the plot, its themes and symbols.
