Learning Goals

Participants will learn how the College family can work with the Food Collaborative. The Food Collaborative is the combined effort of various College support services, and faculty and administrators. We are dedicated to addressing our students’ basic needs and providing resources for overall success by actively working to educate, promote and advocate for the nourishment of all of our students.

Seminar Description

The Food Collaborative was created in recognition of the importance that food plays in helping students better focus, learn and do well in class. We encourage confident choices, where eating healthy, on the run and on a budget is a part of everyday routine. Students are connected to opportunities such as food funds, vouchers and stamps, food pantries, snacks, free meals, volunteering opportunities and advocacy events. We’ve made it easy for students to get what they need, no matter where they are.

Everyone is invited to contribute to the "resource bank" of food sources on and off campus. The end goal is to create a food directory for student to tap into any time and day of the week.

One widely used and understood leadership theory is Maslow’s hierarchy of needs. It is a motivational theory in psychology comprising a five-tier model of human needs, often depicted as hierarchical levels within a pyramid. From the bottom of the hierarchy upwards, the needs are: physiological (food and clothing), safety (job security), love and belonging needs (friendship), esteem, and self-actualization. Needs lower down in the hierarchy must be satisfied before individuals can attend to higher needs. Food Sovereignty is the first need and this collaborative effort supports not only supports student success but excellence!
