SESSION A: Who are our ELLs?

Presenters: Talar Kaloustian,
Audience: Faculty, Staff, Administrators
In-Person: Bonnell, BR-22

Learning Goals
Participants will:

  • Identify the demographic trends of ELLs in Philadelphia
  • Learn about and understand the categories of English Language Learners at CCP
  • Discuss and learn from faculty and staff experiences with ELLs at CCP

Seminar Description
This session will present an overview of English Language Learner (ELL) stats in Philadelphia regarding language and cultural backgrounds, and how these play a role in the College culture at large. This begins with recognizing the different “categories” of our ESL students; contrary to popular assumption, all ESL students are not the same. Exploring how ESL students are not the same will make way for discussions around perceptions and experiences of both the students and the staff/faculty. Understanding the nuances of ELL experiences strengthens a teacher’s/admin's standing inside and outside the classroom as it creates a space to connect with students on a deeper level and develop better rapport.
