Refocusing Your Public Profile by Way of the Selfie-Portrait

Presenter: Brian Seymour
Audience: Faculty, Staff, Administrators
In-Person: Bonnell, BR-46

Learning Goals

Participants will:

  • Become more reflective on how we project our image in public, esp. through social media and professional profiles.
  • Consider how we might engage students in related assignments in the various disciplines.
  • Devise strategies on how to meet others where they are and be mindful of ways they share who they are.

Seminar Description
This seminar will introduce an assignment I have been refining called the Selfie-Portrait. I will display ways in which students have brought new energy to this task and explore potential benefits to meet them where they are. This academic exercise will elevate the prevalent practice of the selfie to consider nuanced matters of communication and meaning.

I will ask attendees to reflect on the ways they present their own image in public and ask them to share ideas on how they might bring more intentionality to this activity. I am hopeful that as we reflect on our own identity we might become more open and accepting of the way others project what is important to them by way of their public images.
