Program Description

In Case You Missed it from Fall PD Week: When I first began teaching at CCP, under my first tenure-track position, and after 17 years of adjunct teaching, I knew very little about how to manage my own finances. But by harnessing the true power of a steady, predictable income, even if a humble one, I was able to get out of debt, save up an emergency fund, and find great joy in putting money into savings. It is impossible to explain the immediate effect on stress that savings can have until you experience it yourself, which is why I would like to offer my own tips and insight into taking control of your personal finances, making the most of this great job and income, and living the life you really want.

To be more specific, there are many simple things you can start doing right now, like meeting with a TIAA advisor to fine-tune your retirement account (this can be done annually, and many older workers forget to adjust as they get closer to retirement), using an app like Mint to track all your spending in one easy location, doing an assessment of household expenses and determining if they truly add to your happiness (still have cable?), understanding the value of nixing your electric bill with solar, recognizing the dopamine effect of contributing to IRAs and ETFs (better than buying shoes), etc, etc, etc. Bring your own tips and ideas, along with questions. This will be an interactive and engaging session.
