Learning Goals

  • - Become more knowledgeable about the impact that the lack of basic needs has on student development and persistence
  • - Learn more about how students can access various campus and community resources that can provide support and assist them during their time at CCP and beyond
  • - Increase familiarity with Single Stop’s services

Program Description

Nevitt Sanford, who was a psychologist and scholar, theorized that the challenges that students will face while in college need to be met with “supports that can sufficiently tolerate the stress of the challenge itself”. For example, a student at CCP does not have book store credit and has no financial means to be able to purchase their books for the semester. This student can apply for emergency funds so that they can purchase the required books. In the Student Development and Basic Needs Seminar, Single Stop staff will discuss Sanford’s theory with specific examples of challenges that CCP students face. Staff will explain the importance of recognizing the barriers that our students deal with and how our institutional community can work together to help them overcome these barriers.
