Seminar Description

It is an unfortunate misconception that data is neutral. It’s common to hear that it is “simply numbers”, “just the facts”, etc. This is far from the truth. Our information systems are imbued with the prejudices of its creators, the pitfalls of our data sources, and the blind spots of its users. In higher education, it is imperative to confront our biases so we can better serve a diverse student population. This presentation will cover ways that bias is introduced into data and an anti-racist framework for combatting it.
