The Power of Error Analysis: ESL Students’ Use of Error Analysis to Improve Their Essays

Presenters: Joanna Labov
Audience: Faculty

Learning Goals

Participants will:

  • Learn how to use an error analysis table in their classrooms.
  • View directions for how to create an error table, the model error table that students were given and, two error tables created by my students.
  • Learn how to motivate the use of the error table assignment to their students. I will discuss how I used the error tables in my classes. My students learned the value of their errors and how to view them in a positive light.
  • Learn in an interactive way the value of using error analysis tables in their classrooms.
  • Share their thoughts of how they can use the error table assignment in their writing classes.
  • Be encouraged to share how they teach their students to analyze their errors to improve their writing skills.

Seminar Description

This presentation is useful for all English faculty who teach composition courses at CCP. Although I am an ESL professor in the English department, any English faculty member would benefit from attending my presentation. The error table assignment can be used to improve the writing skills for all CCP students registered in English 101 courses. Students' analysis of the errors that they create in their essays will help them understand how to improve their composition skills. This will result in making the students' essays more comprehensible to their readers.
