White Privilege Session 2: White Supremacy Culture - Diversity Certificate Program

Presenters: Rainah Chambliss, Mary Hoeffel, and Elisa McCool
Description: White supremacists are in the news a lot these days, but what if we were to talk about the ways our entire culture, including all its norms and institutions, uphold white supremacy? What does it mean to say that ours is a white supremacy culture, one that reinforces existing racist power structures? And what can we do about it? Come talk about the ways white supremacy is a system with a long history and far reach, and the implications that has on our here and now. Our session will grapple with these questions as well as develop strategies for recognizing and managing the difficult emotions that sometimes arise when discussing race in order to become better listeners, educators and anti-racist allies, and to more effectively support diversity initiatives on campus. All faculty, staff and administrators at the college are welcome.
