Program Description
The Fall 2021 general education revision grew out of a faculty-led and faculty-driven collaborative process in which more than 150 faculty at the College have participated since 2018, and student, faculty, employer, and transfer partner focus groups and surveys also guided this important work. This seminar provides background on the revision’s development and journey through College governance and an update on the status of Fall 2021 implementation, including the catalog, MyDegreePath, and plans to communicate with students. The Fall 2021 general education revision represents a move from disciplines to six Essential Skills:

  1. Cultural Analysis and Interpretation,
  2. Oral Communication/Creative Expression,
  3. Quantitative Reasoning,
  4. Scientific Reasoning,
  5. Technological Competency, and
  6. Writing, Research, and Information Literacy.

This seminar includes a hands-on element in which participants share how students learn or build upon one or more of the six Essential Skills of general education in their courses, leading to a discussion of how faculty can take part in meaningful general education assessment based in their favorite classroom practices that emphasize critical thinking and transparent instructional design as well as how we can work collaboratively to assess student learning across disciplines and in programs and pathways. We will also preview the AAC&U VALUE Rubrics to plan how we might adapt them to assess student learning in general education at the College.
