Frequently Asked Questions:

  • How do I apply for Advanced Placement Nursing at Community College of Philadelphia?
Potential applicants may attend one of the Advanced Placement Nursing application workshops held by the Counseling Center in Fall or Spring. Applications are available online at https://www.ccp.edu/academic-offerings/all-offerings/nursing/nursing-intake-process
  • Do I need to take the Kaplan exam or any entrance exam to apply for Advanced Placement Nursing? No
  • When will I be notified about my acceptance or denial of my application to the Advanced Placement Nursing program?
Late June or early July 2021
  • If accepted in the program, when do I start?
Students who are admitted enroll in a non-credit course (Health B9026) for the Fall 2021 semester. This non-credit course is designed to help you transition into Nursing 132. If successful in Health B9026, advanced placement students enroll in Nursing 132 (7 credits) for the Spring semester starting in January 2022.
  • When is the Health Transition course held?
The Health Transition course runs from mid-September thru early December. The course usually meets hybrid (online/in-person) once every other week from 10am-1pm on Main campus. This may vary each application cycle. In addition, much of the course is taught as an online through Canvas. This course is self-directed. Students must successfully complete all components of this course to receive credit by life experience for Nursing 101.
  • Can I take Nursing 101 course at the same time as the Health Transition course?
The Nursing faculty encourage Advanced Placement students to audit (sit in and take for free with no grade) portions of Nursing 101. Taking part in the Nursing 101 course will help a student transition into the Nursing 132 schedule and understand the course load expected of them.
  • Can I work during the Health Transition course?
Yes. Due to scheduling and the amount of work, you may be able to work full or part-time. However, students should be prepared to significantly decrease work hours once they enter Nursing 132 and beyond. Once you are taking a 7 credit Nursing course, you are in class 18 hours a week and expected to designate approximately 54 hours or more to homework and studying if you wish to be successful.
  • Is the Health Transition course free?
No. Health B9026 is a non-credit course that every student must pay to take. Financial Aid will not cover the cost of this course.
  • What skills are needed to complete the Health Transition course?
Although the Health Transition course is non-credit, it will consist of a great deal of work. During the Health Transition course you may need the following skills, plus more: computer skills (ability to create/save/upload and electronically submit Word documents and view Power Point presentations), write papers in APA format, ability to pass a math skills test, ability to pass health skills assessment, etc.
  • How long will it take me to complete the nursing program using the Advanced Placement option?
You will receive credit by life experience for the first nursing course (Nursing 101). You must then complete 3 additional courses. It will take 3 semesters (Spring - Nursing 132, Fall - Nursing 231, Spring – Nursing 232) to complete the entire Nursing Associates degree program.
