Diversity Certificate Program Seminar: I'm more than just a label: clarifying misconceptions about what it means to be Muslim

Presenter: Sajeda Virji
Location: W2-13

Program Description:
My gender gives me a label, my headscarf gives me another, but I’m more than just those labels. There have been plenty of challenges along my journey of being a visible Muslim woman, but they’ve never made me question my decision – they’ve only made me more proud and secure in my identity.

My story is like other Muslim women, and like those women, we’re perfectly fine with being asked questions about our faith and culture, because our stories provide us with the opportunity to have discussions and dialogues that build friendships and communities. And now more than ever, in a time when there are so many misconceptions about being Muslim, there is so much beauty, opportunity and similarity in a world that offers understanding – if only we have those conversations.

Through a dialogue, this session will leave participants with a greater understanding of what it means to be Muslim in such a polarizing world, because despite the struggles in the last few years especially, this Muslim is here to tell you that it truly has never been ‘cooler’ to be Muslim than it is now.
