Becoming Trauma Informed

Julie Odell (jodell@ccp.edu), English

Today's session is a repeat of the presentation during professional development week.

Trauma affects students’ relationships, behavior, and ability to learn and succeed in reaching their goals. Traumatized students may miss more class, have difficulty completing assignments, and behave in ways that are disruptive to others and counter-productive to their success. While K-12 education has immersed itself in learning about trauma in recent years, higher education lags behind. CCP has outstanding support resources, but we aren’t where we need to be regarding true understanding of trauma and its impact on our students. We the College community must become trauma-informed to help our students manage toxic stress and succeed in our classes.

In this workshop we’ll educate ourselves on trauma, safety, emotional intelligence, connection, communication, resilience and healing. We will learn what it means to create a trauma-informed classroom and college. Upcoming workshops will cover mindfulness practice, brain breaks, and developing resilience.
