Diversity Certificate Program: We Wear The Mask Part 1 (in BG-07G, not the FCTL)

Mental health professionals have found that People of Color (POCs) typically do not report feelings of sadness, hopelessness or helplessness (Baker, 2001). Due to the differences in symptom presentation, depression often goes undiagnosed and untreated. People of Color are more likely to wait until symptoms become severe before seeking help and are more inclined to seek cultural solutions rather than psychiatric treatment. Asian college students have higher rates of depression and suicidal ideation than their White counterparts (Tummala-Narra, Li, &Chang, 2018). Irritability, hostility, negativism and internalized anger are common depressive symptoms in African-Americans, Latinx and those living in poverty (Raskin, 1975). In this session, you will learn about depression and suicide: signs (including classroom behaviors), symptoms, cultural differences (in Asian, Black, Caribbean, Latinx), barriers to treatment, risk factors, and resources.
